Optical Novae and candidates in M 31

We created a catalogue of all historical optical novae and candidates detected in M 31. During this work we noticed that a homogeneous naming of all novae and candidates in M 31 is missing. After discussions with Nicolai Samus, who's group provided naming for some novae and candidates in the "General Catalogue of Variable Stars" in the CDS/ADC Collection of Electronic Catalogues, 2250 (2004) and Daniel Green from the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams CBAT of the International Astronomical Union, we decided to extend the CBAT naming scheme to all optical novae and candidates in M 31 that have been reported in the literature and made the information available in Pietsch et al. 2007 (Table A.1, novae with outbursts before end of 2005) together with additional parameters and references (Table A.2) and in an up-to-date and extended form via the Internet.

We intend to update the Internet pages regularly. Observers are encouraged to provide input for historical and forthcoming optical novae in M 31 to the email address below.

We will include photometric and spectroscopic data of optical novae and candidates in M 31 covering all wavelengths.
For newly detected nova candidates with no name given by CBAT we asign a preliminary name YYYY?MMx which may change when an offical CBAT name has been assigned.

Novae_A&A and References_A&A are the tables for the 719 (apparent) novae with outbursts before end of 2005 as presented in the Appendix of the PHS2007 paper. In addition we give the optical photometry of novae in M 31 by Kamil Hornoch (Appendix B, Table B2). The format is the one described in ReadMe_A&A.

To support our X-ray monitoring program we also started a optical monitoring program and spectroscopic follow-up observations for optical novae in M 31 and improved the database for historical novae in M 31.
