INTEGRAL

INTErnational Gamma-Ray Astrophysics Laboratory

Short Description:

INTEGRAL is the European Space Agency's key project in the field of Gamma-ray astronomy and high-energy astrophysics. INTEGRAL is dedicated to fine Gamma-ray spectroscopy and accurate imaging of celestial sources in the energy band 15 keV to 10 MeV with concurrent source monitoring in the X-ray (3-35 keV) and optical (V-band, 550 nm) bands.

Project Type:

Instrument for satellite

MPE Contribution:

INTEGRAL is a collaborative project by many research institutions.

The MPE was responsible for the development of the anticoincidence subsystem of the spectrometer SPI.

The INTEGRAL SPI data archive is at MPE.

Status:

launch:                  October 17, 2002

actual status:       active in Earth orbit

end of mission:     in June 2013 the ESA Science Program Committee endorsed
the extension of the INTEGRAL mission until the end of December
                             2016.
