IPELS'99: Access

Dear Colleague,

In order to assist you with transportation from Munich airport or Central Railway Station to Kreuth we give you subsequently travel information for rental car and train. From those who do not intend to expose themselves to the thrill of driving on a German Autobahn or riding on the Bavarian local train (Munich - Tegernsee) and, therefore, look for transportation provided by the Local Organizers, we need asap dates and times of arrival, flight or train no., number of persons (email). As soon as we have a good overview, we will return information about the schedule and points of departure of the busses or cars that we can organize. Of course, our capacities are limited, which may create inconveniences or even inability to help. We hope for your understanding.

If you rent a car at the airport,
you have chosen the easiest and most convenient way to go to Kreuth. It will take about 90-120 min using motorways (Autobahn) and federal roads. Most of the route is found on a map on our web page.
You leave the airport direction `München', entering the motorway A96 from the airport access road. At the next motorway intersection, you should leave A96 and enter A9 direction 'München'. After having passed Garching, you should leave A9 at the intersection with A99, following direction 'Salzburg'. At 'Brunnthal'-intersection you leave A99, entering A8, still direction 'Salzburg'. You leave A8 at exit 'Holzkirchen' entering a federal road. Follow the signs to 'Tegernsee'. Once you get to 'Gmund' you can go around the lake either on its eastern or western shore (the latter side is slightly better to drive). You will end up on the lake's southern side, where you should go direction 'Kreuth' or 'Achensee'. Soon afterward you will enter Kreuth, where Hotel zur Post is on your right-hand side.

If you take the train from the airport,
it will take about 2 hours, and you will have to change trains once. You will also have to take a Taxi from Tegernsee to Kreuth.

Please look up Deutsche Bahn AG for connections. You can buy a ticket at the airport (Train station and ticket office/vending machines are in the Central Area). If you arrive on the weekend, please buy the 'Schönes Wochenende Ticket': it costs DM 35 and allows travel in a group of up to 5 persons (on weekdays use the Bayern-Ticket, same price but for 2 adults and up to 3 kids and with restrictions on rush hour travel). You take the S-Bahn to `Donnersberger Brücke', and change trains there, because it is much easier than at the central station (unless you arrive at central station from elsewhere or want to look around Munich before you get on your way to Kreuth). From Tegernsee station it is about 10 km to Kreuth. The taxi ride will cost about 30 DM.

If you arrive by train at Munich Hbf (Central Railway Station),
look for the trains to Tegernsee. Otherwise follow the instructions above.
