Vorwort / Preface

Der vorliegende Jahresbericht des Max-Planck-Instituts für extraterrestrische Physik (MPE) gibt eine Übersicht über die laufenden Forschungsprojekte des Instituts, über die im Jahr 2003 geleistete Arbeit und über unsere Pläne für die Zukunft.
This annual report of the Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik (MPE) provides information about the current research projects of the institute, its activities in 2003 and about our plans for the future.

Das MPE arbeitet seit seiner Gründung im Jahre 1963 an vorderster Front in der Weltraumforschung. Unser Ziel ist es, wesentliche Beiträge zur Erforschung des Kosmos und zur physikalischen Grundlagenforschung zu erbringen. Dabei haben sich die Forschungsschwerepunkte in den letzten 40 Jahren stark verschoben, von der Ionosphärenphysik, Magnetosphärenphysik, Kosmischen Strahlung bis zur Astronomie und den komplexen (kolloidalen) Plasmen. Das MPE hat immer einen "integrierten" Forschungsansatz verfolgt, vom Experiment bis zur Theorie. Das erfordert die Entwicklung und den Einsatz leistungsfähiger Teleskope und Meßgeräte, die Anwendung modernster Computertechnologie bei der Datenverarbeitung, die Gewinnung neuer Erkenntnisse durch die Interpretation der gewonnenen Daten und durch beobachtungsnahe theoretische Arbeiten.

The MPE has been involved in front-line space research since its foundation in 1963. Our goal is to make significant contributions to the exploration of the universe and to basic research in physics. Our main research areas have seen significant shifts in the last 40 years, from ionospheric physics, magnetospheric physics, cosmic ray research to astronomy and complex (colloidal) plasma research. In carrying out our research we have always followed an "integrated" strategy comprising all the steps from experiment to theory. This involves the development and use of efficient telescopes and instruments, the application of modern computer technology for the data processing and of course the search for new insights and the gain of new knowledge by interpretation of the data and associated theoretical work.

Ein weiterer Aspekt unserer Arbeit ist der Technologie- und Wissenstransfer in andere Bereiche der Grundlagenforschung und in industrielle Anwendungen. Unsere Erfolge in der Vergangenheit sind die Grundlage für Planungen, die sich weit in die Zukunft erstrecken.

Another aspect of our work is the transfer of technology and know-how into other areas of fundamental research and into industrial applications. Our past successes are the basis for plans that extend far into the future.

Inbetriebnahme des Infrarotinstruments "SPIFFI" am ESO-VLT Observatorium im Februar 2003.

Lieferung des ersten Primärspiegels des "Large Binocular Telescope" (LBT), an dem die MPG einen 25%igen Anteil hält, im Sommer 2003.

Feier zum 40. Gründungsjahr des MPE und gleichzeitig zum 80. Geburtstag seines Gründers Professor Reimar Lüst im Juli.

Auswahl von "KMOS" (Multi-Integral-Feld-Spectrograph) für das VLT im Septemper 2003.

Auswahl des "Dark Universe Observer" (DUO) für eine Phase-A Studie durch die NASA im November 2003.

Erweiterung der INTEGRAL-Missionsdauer bis 2007 durch die ESA im November 2003.

Durchführung von jetzt insgesamt 10 Experimenten auf der Internationalen Raumstation mit dem PKE-Nefedov Instrument (komplexe Plasmen), das letzte im Dezember 2003.

First operation of the infrared instrument "SPIFFI" at the ESO-VLT Observatory in February 2003.

Delivery of the first primary mirror of the "Large Binocular Telescope" (LBT) in summer 2003. The MPG has a 25% stake in this project.

Celebration of the 40^th anniversary of MPE, together with the 80^th birthday of its founder Professor Reimar Lüst in July.

Selection of "KMOS" (a multi-integral-field spectrograph) for the VLT in September 2003.

Selection of the "Dark Universe Observer" (DUO) for phase-A study by NASA in November 2003.

Extension of the INTEGRAL-mission until 2007 by ESA in November 2003.

A total of 10 experiments have now been carried out onboard the International Space Station with the PKE-Nefedov instrument (complex plasmas), the last one in December 2003.
