IR-Group Printers
Main Printers
The following printers should be available from every computer. You may
click on the name to check print queue status (works only from inside the
institute). Unfortunately, deleting a print job is only possible by
a sys-admin.

Setting up printers
Windows XP
Printers are set up by Frau Kollmer or Frau Oberauer. If you like to do it yourself, here is
a quick howto:
- Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Printers and Faxes
- On the left, select Add a printer. The "Add Printer Wizard" appears. Click "Next >".
- Select "Local printer attached to this computer" and de-select "Automatically detect and install my Plug and Play printer". Click "Next >"
- Select "Create a new port:". Type of port: "LPR Port". Click "Next >". If "LPR Port" is not available in the drop-down list, do the following:
- Click "< Back"
- Select "A network printer, or a printer attached to another computer". Click "Next >".
- Select "Connect to a printer on the Internet or on a home or office network:". URL: http://irprint1.mpe.mpg.de:631/printers/pir3s (replace pir3s by the printer which you wish to add). Click "Next >".
- Skip Step 5, proceeding with Step 6 in this list
- The "Add LPR compatible printer" dialog appears: Enter "Name or address of server providing lpd:" irprint1.mpe.mpg.de, and "Name of printer or print queue on that server:" pir3s (replace by the printer which you would like to add). Click "OK".
- A dialog box appears in which you can select the printer driver. The printer drivers for printers in the IR group are located at
/afs/mpe.mpg.de/tmp/PrinterDrivers.
- In the next dialog box, you might be able to supply a name for the printer (if you used the LPR protocol in step 4). It's best to use the same name as the print queue. The next question is "Do you want to use this printer as the default printer?". Anser yes, or no according to your needs. Click "Next >"
- The last dialog box shows a summary of your newly added printer. Click "Finish".
- Adjust the settings for the newly added printer by right-clicking its icon, and selecting "Properties". Things to consider are paper sizes (A4, A3, ISO A0, ...), Duplex unit installed, ...
Unix
Unix printers are setup by your sysadmin. If you like to do that yourself,
you can choose CUPS as your printing system and poll irprint1
for available printers. Cups will locate and configure all print queues in
house automatically. If cannot or do not want to use cups: use the lpd protocol
and setup printers one by one.
What to do if a printer doesn't work
First check for out-of-paper or similar error conditions. You can also
try power cycling the printer (wait a few seconds after switching off before
switching on again). If the problem cannot be fixed, ask a sys-admin for assistance.
Deleting a print job is only possible by a sys-admin.
