THE ROLE OF MERGERS
AND FEEDBACK IN GALAXY FORMATION
Ringberg Castle, Germany
31st October - 6th
November 2004

What's New !
WORKSHOP SUMMARY
As is traditional for our
workshops, we take an interdisciplinary approach
to a well-focussed topic. This year we will explore the roles of merging
and feedback in galaxy formation, with particular emphasis on the
formation of massive galaxies and QSOs at z~2-3. We intend to stimulate
intense discussions between theorists and observers. We also want to
compare the detailed physical knowledge of the local universe with the
wealth of empirical results at high redshift. Topics will include:
- Properties of massive galaxies at high redshift
- Galaxy evolution: clues from the local universe
- Star formation in extreme environments
- Feedback due to starbursts and AGN
- Properties and simulations of mergers
- The physical connection between powerful starbursts
and AGN
- Models of galaxy formation and evolution
Due to space limitations in the lecture hall and dining room at the
castle, attendance is limited to 65 people, and participation in the
workshop will be by invitation only. The structure of the workshop
will be one where there are a combination of comprehensive review talks
and highlights from important recent work. The presentations will be
25-30
minutes including questions to allow maximum time for targeted
discussion
sessions and debates throughout the week.

WORKSHOP SCHEDULE
The scientific sessions will begin on Monday,
1st November at 8:45 AM, and
end on Friday evening, 5th November. Participants should plan to arrive in
the Munich area by Sunday, 31st
October by 2pm or earlier. We plan to hire
a bus to take participants from the Munich area to Ringberg Castle on
Sunday, leaving the Munich airport and downtown Munich in the
mid-afternoon. People wishing to use this bus should indicate this on
the
itinerary information form.
The bus will return participants to Munich on
Saturday
06th November, leaving Ringberg promptly after breakfast.
Please note that Ringberg Castle is not open before 16:30 on
Sunday, so
participants should not venture
up to the castle before then.
Details about
the conference bus can be
found here.
The
latest
schedule for the workshop is available below!
Each session will consist of review and highlight talks
concluded by longer discussion periods. The times listed include time
for
a few questions. We will continue to post any last minute changes
to the
program as they occur until just before the workshop.

REGISTRATION
There will be a registration fee of EUR 100 (EUR 130 if you would like
to
attend the concert on Wednesday evening) is payable in cash at the
opening buffet at
Ringberg on Sunday evening. This fee covers the costs of the opening
dinner, transportation to and from Ringberg and Munich, transportation
to
and from the Wednesday outing, entrance fees to the Hallein Salt Mines,
the conference dinner on Wednesday evening, and conference
materials. We
cannot take payment by credit cards, so participants should come to
Ringberg with sufficient amounts of Euros to cover this fee.

POSTERS
Poster boards of size 125cmx125cm will be available at Ringberg.
Although no invited participants have been assigned posters, we strongly
encourage you to bring along your newest results and/or copies of your
talk to hang up as a poster. We will have many long coffee breaks in the
poster area, and this will give everyone a further opportunity to hear
about your work. We ask that you drop us an email (
ringberg@mpe.mpg.de)
to let us know you plan to do this so we know how many poster boards to
assemble at Ringberg beforehand. Posters will remain on display for
the
entire duration of the workshop.

CONFIRMED PARTICIPANTS
A final list of participants can be found here.

SOCIAL EVENTS
Discussion/Socialising time will follow each night after dinner at the
castle.
In addition two social events are planned:
1) There will be a welcome dinner
buffet at Ringberg castle for all
participants and accompanying persons paying the
registration fee
Sunday evening, 31 October at 19:00. Conference
registration will take
place at the Castle prior to and during the buffet.
2) There is an excursion to the Salzburg
area on Wednesday, 3 November
for
all participants and their guests. At the conclusion of
the morning
session, we will grab boxed lunches, depart at noon and
make a ~ 2hr
trip to the salt mining town of Hallein on the
German-Austrian border,
where we will tour a former salt-mine. After the
tour, we will drive
to historic Salzburg, where participants will have the
chance to wander
through the city for a couple of hours to visit shops,
cafes, museums,
a fortress, etc. The outing day will culminate in
the conference
dinner at 18:00 (price included in the fee) at a Salzburg
restaurant.
After dinner those who have signed up will walk to the "Schlosskonzert"
at the Schloss Mirabell.
The concert starts at 8 PM and will last
about 90 minutes. Those who have not signed up to go
to the concert
will have a further opportunity to explore Salzburg's
cafes and pubs.
Buses will then leave Salzburg around 22:00 and return
participants and
their guests to Ringberg and the hotel arriving between
23:30 and
midnight. Further details about the outing will be
available at
Ringberg.

WORKSHOP VENUE
The venue for the workshop is the Schloß Ringberg
(Ringberg Castle),
a turn of the century castle located in the foothills of the Bavarian
Alps, and
overlooking the Tegernsee. Located about 70 km south of Munich, the
Tegernsee is a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and small
resort villages. The peaceful location, relaxed meeting schedule,
and attendance limit of 65 set by the size of the castle are all
conducive to an informal workshop atmosphere offering many
opportunities for stimulating discussion.

ACCOMODATION AND
SUBSISTENCE
The LOC will pay for
lodging and meals of all participants for the
duration of the workshop. We have arranged that everyone stay
either at
Ringberg Castle (which has rooms for 35-40 people) or at the Hotel Zur
Post in the nearby village of Kreuth (http://www.hotel-zur-post-kreuth.de).
You
should have already received an email message with your
arrangements. If
you did not receive this message please let us know immediately.
Lunch and dinner will be provided for all participants at Ringberg
Castle.
Unfortunately, we cannot pay for meals and lodging for accompanying
guests. Accompanying guests can have dinner at the castle for an
extra
charge. Please send us an email asking about rates in this case. It
would
be very helpful to the Ringberg staff and the LOC if you could let us
know
at registration on Sunday evening which meals you will take at the
Castle.
Vegetarian meals and other special dietary requests are happily
accommodated provided advance notice is given. If you have not
already
indicated your special requests, please send us a short email message
soon.

Daily transportation from the Hotel zur Post to the castle (about a
10-15
minute drive) will be provided by the LOC in the morning in time for the
first session, and then again in the evening before dinner if requested
and back to the hotels after dinner after some socializing time. It will
not be possible for the LOC to provide transportation during the lunch
break, however.

LOGISTICS
Participants should start to plan their travel to the Munich
area soon.
By
Air
The Munich Franz-Josef Strauss Airport lies approximately 30
and 100 km
north of Munich and Ringberg respectively. Most major carriers
offer
service to Munich, with an ever increasing number of direct flights even
on more distant routes. Those participants arriving on Sunday, 31
October, before mid-afternoon will be met at the airport by one of the
LOC, and taken to the conference bus.
For participants arriving in the
area already on Friday or Saturday the LOC can help to arrange for hotel
accommodations in the Munich area.
By
Train
Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) can be reached from
anywhere within
Europe. From there, there are good public transportation
connections to
all of Munich, as well as to the area around Ringberg Castle
(Tegernsee). People
arriving by train on Sunday can take the conference bus to Ringberg as
well. We will announce the pickup point for central Munich a few
weeks
before the meeting.
By
Car
Schloß Ringberg is located about 70 km SE of
Munich. For those
interested in driving directly to the castle on Sunday the LOC will post
detailed maps and instructions on the web-site in advance of the
workshop.
All major car rental companies have branches at the Munich Airport.
There
is ample parking at the castle, and at the hotel in Kreuth.
Conference
Bus
We have hired a bus to take participants from the Munich
Airport and the
Hotel Astoria on Nicolaistrasse in Munich to Ringberg Castle on Sunday,
31
October, leaving the airport at 2 PM from in front of the arrivals area
in
Terminal 1, Block C, and the Hotel Astoria in Munich around 3:15.
LOC members will be at the Munich airport to greet participants and show
them the way to the bus on Sunday starting around 13:00. One
person will
be posted at the arrivals area of Terminal 2 (terminal for Lufthansa and
Star Alliance flights), and another will be at the arrivals area of
Terminal 1, Block C. They will be carrying colorful signs
indicating the
Ringberg Workshop and Max-Planck Institute, so that you can easily
identify them. If you arrive on Sunday morning and have some time
to kill
before the bus leaves, there is a large shopping center, many
restaurants,
showers, etc available at the newly remodeled Munich airport. You
can
check the airport webpage: www.munich-airport.de/EN/index.html for more
information.
An LOC member will also be in front of the Hotel Astoria starting at
14:45
for those meeting the bus there (the central Munich stop). To get
to this
hotel from the Munich Central train station (Hauptbahnhof) take either
the
U4 or U5 sub-way line to the Odeonsplatz stop, and transfer to the U3
line
(direction Olympiazentrum) or the U6 line (direction Garching-
Hochbrueck). Take this train to the Muenchener Freiheit stop. You
can
also take any S-Bahn train to Marienplatz from the Central Station, and
transfer to the U3 or U6 from there. From there it is a short
walk to the
Hotel Astoria. Leave the Muenchener Freiheit station from the southeast
exit, continue walking south, and Nicolaistrasse will be on your
left.
The Hotel Astoria is on the left at the end of this short street.
The bus will return participants to Munich airport and central Munich on
Saturday, 6 November. Depending on demand, there may be a smaller
shuttle
van from Ringberg to the Munich airport on Friday evening as
well. The
bus will depart from Ringberg Castle at around 8:30-09:00 AM,
immediately
after breakfast on Saturday and arrive at the airport about 1.5 hours
later, depending on traffic.
Many of you have already said that you will take the bus either to
and/or
from Ringberg, but if you have not already indicated this please let us
know soon in a short email message or with the itinerary information form.
For those attendees who arrive on
Sunday after about 2 PM (since it will take you a while to collect your
luggage, and clear passport control and customs) the LOC will do our
best
to arrange that one of our private cars get you to Ringberg later on
Sunday afternoon. We need sufficient advance notice for this, however,
so
please indicate any special needs as soon as possible! For
participants
arriving after about 5 PM on Sunday the LOC will all have left for
Ringberg already, and it will be necessary to take a train and taxi to
Ringberg from the Munich area. The instructions on how to do this,
complete with train schedules, can be found at
http://www.rzg.mpg.de/ringberg-castle/anfahrt.html.
Daily transportation from the Hotel zur Post to the castle
(about a 10-15
minute drive) will be provided by the LOC in the morning in time for the
first session, and then again in the evening before dinner if requested
and back to the hotels after dinner after some socializing time. It will
not be possible for the LOC to provide transportation during the lunch
break, however.

ITINERARY INFORMATION FORM
If you have not informed the LOC of your travel plans please
fill out the itinerary
information form so that we know whom to meet
at the airport or in Munich on Sunday afternoon,
or if you are not taking the bus, when you will arrive at Ringberg.
You should send either the form
or a short message to:
ringberg@mpe.mpg.de
with your travel details.

VISA
For those participants from countries requiring a visa to enter Germany,
it is best to start the application procedure soon. Please check
with
your local German Consulate or travel agent for information about
required
travel documents. The LOC is happy to provide letters of invitation if
they are required.

WEATHER
Bavarian weather in the autumn can be higly variable. Daytime
highs are
usually around 10 degrees Celcius and nighttime lows near
freezing. We
can also expect to see some rain and fog at this time of year, but if we
are lucky with sunny days, the autumn weather can be fantastic!
