THE ROLE OF MERGERS
AND FEEDBACK IN GALAXY FORMATION email: ringberg@mpe.mpg.de FIRST ANNOUNCEMENTWe are pleased to announce a workshop entitled "The Role of Mergers andFeedback in Galaxy Formation" to be held at Schloss Ringberg (Ringberg Castle) in Bavaria from 31 October to 6 November 2004. PURPOSE OF THE WORKSHOP: As is traditional for our workshops, we take an interdisciplinary approach to a well-focussed topic. This year we will explore the roles of merging and feedback in galaxy formation, with particular emphasis on the formation of massive galaxies and QSOs at z~2-3. We intend to stimulate intense discussions between theorists and observers. We also want to compare the detailed physical knowledge of the local universe with the wealth of empirical results at high redshift. Topics will include: - Properties of massive galaxies at high redshift - Galaxy evolution: clues from the local universe - Star formation in extreme environments - Feedback due to starbursts and AGN - Properties and simulations of mergers - The physical connection between powerful starbursts and AGN - Models of galaxy formation and evolution Due to space limitations in the lecture hall and dining room at the castle, attendance is limited to 65 people, and participation in the workshop will be by invitation only. The structure of the workshop will be one where there are a combination of comprehensive review talks and highlights from important recent work. The presentations will be 25-30 minutes including questions to allow maximum time for targeted discussion sessions and debates throughout the week. SCIENTIFIC ORGANIZING COMMITTEE: Linda Tacconi, Reinhard Genzel, Dieter Lutz, and Matt Lehnert (SOC and LOC) Ralf Bender Andi Burkert Andrea Cimatti Guenther Hasinger Guinevere Kauffmann Olivier LeFevre Simon Lilly Ian Smail Rachel Sommerville Chuck Steidel Wil van Breugel WORKSHOP VENUE: The venue for the workshop is the Schloss Ringberg, a turn of the century castle located in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, and overlooking the Tegernsee. Located about 70 km south of Munich, the Tegernsee is a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and small resort villages. The peaceful location, relaxed meeting schedule, and attendance limit of 65 set by the size of the castle are all conducive to an informal workshop atmosphere offering many opportunities for stimulating discussion. WORKSHOP SCHEDULE AND LOGISTICS: Participants should plan to arrive in the Munich area by Sunday evening, October 31. We will open the workshop with a welcome buffet at Ringberg Castle on Sunday evening. The scientific sessions will start first thing on Monday, November 1, and run through Friday evening, November 5. The LOC will provide transporation from Munich airport and central Munich to Ringberg Castle on Sunday, and return transportation after breakfast on Saturday, November 6. We will schedule a free afternoon during the workshop, which will include a trip to a nearby tourist attraction, and ending with the conference dinner. Given the unreliability of Bavarian weather in early November, we will not plan a conference hike this time! The LOC will pay for lodging and meals of all participants for the duration of the workshop. We will arrange accommodation either at Ringberg Castle (which has rooms for 35-40 people) or at a hotel in one of the nearby villages. Lunch and dinner are provided for all participants at Ringberg Castle. The LOC will arrange for daily transportation from the hotel(s) to the castle (about a 10-15 minute drive) in the morning in time for the first session, and back to the hotels after dinner/socializing time. To subsidize the costs for transportation and the conference excursion we will likely have a small conference fee of about 100 Euros. Return to workshop home page ![]()
