THE ROLE OF MERGERS
AND FEEDBACK IN GALAXY FORMATION email: ringberg@mpe.mpg.de SECOND ANNOUNCEMENTDear Participant of the Ringberg Workshop, Following are registration materials and some logistical information for the Ringberg Workshop on The Role of Mergers and Feedback on Galaxy Evolution. Please fill out the registration and accommodation request form attached at the end of this message, and return it to us by 10 September 2004 at the latest. Once we have your form, we will make hotel or castle reservations. Please be aware that it will not be possible to lodge all participants at Ringberg Castle. This announcement, a copy of the registration form, and the preliminary workshop program will also (soon) be found on the workshop web site: http://www.mpe.mpg.de/ir/meetings/ringmerg2004.html Conference Location and Time ---------------------------- The venue for the workshop is the Schloss Ringberg (Ringberg Castle), a turn of the century castle located in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps and overlooking the Tegernsee. Located south of Munich, the Tegernsee is a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and small resort villages. The peaceful location, meeting schedule, and attendance limit of 65 set by the size of the castle are all conducive to an informal workshop atmosphere offering many opportunities for stimulating discussion. The scientific sessions will begin on Monday, 1 November at 8:45 AM, and end on Friday evening, 5 November. Participants should plan to arrive in the Munich area by Sunday, 31 October by 2 PM or earlier. We plan to hire a bus to take participants from the Munich area to Ringberg Castle on Sunday, leaving the Munich airport and downtown Munich in the mid-afternoon. People wishing to use this bus should indicate this on the registration form. The bus will return participants to Munich on Saturday 06 November, leaving Ringberg promptly after breakfast. Details about bus departure times and locations will be given in the final announcement. Preliminary Program ------------------- The preliminary schedule for the workshop is now available at the workshop web site listed above. Each session will consist of review and highlight talks concluded by longer discussion periods. The times listed include time for a few questions. We will post all changes to the program as they occur, so check back occasionally! Posters ------- Poster boards of size 125cm*125cm will be available at Ringberg. Although no invited participants have been assigned posters, we strongly encourage you to bring along your newest results and/or copies of your talk to hang up as a poster. We will have many long coffee breaks in the poster area, and this will give everyone a further opportunity to hear about your work. We ask that you inform us in advance that you plan to do this to assist us in planning. Posters will remain on display for the entire duration of the workshop. Meals and Lodging ----------------- The LOC will pay for lodging and meals of participants for the duration of the workshop. We will arrange that everyone stay either at Ringberg Castle (which has rooms for 35-40 people) or at the Hotel Zur Post in the nearby village of Kreuth (www.hotel-zur-post-kreuth.de). Lunch and dinner are provided for all participants at Ringberg Castle. Unfortunately, we cannot pay for meals and lodging for accompanying guests. Please send us an email asking about rates in this case. Vegetarian meals and other special dietary requests are happily accommodated provided advance notice is given; please indicate these on the registration form. Due to the limited recreational facilities up at Schloß Ringberg, those people traveling with guests and/or families are strongly recommended to stay in the hotel. For those staying in the hotel daily transportation to the castle (about a 10 minute drive) will be provided by the LOC in the morning in time for the first session, and then again in the evening before dinner and back to the hotels after dinner and some socializing time. Please indicate on the registration form whether you prefer to stay at the castle or at the hotel. We will try as much as possible to adhere to people's wishes for lodging, but it will probably not be possible for everyone to have his/her first choice. To those affected, we apologize, but we're sure that you'll find both accommodations to be very pleasant. Social Events ------------- 1) There will be a welcome dinner buffet at Ringberg castle for all participants and guests paying the registration fee Sunday evening, 31 October. Conference registration will take place at the castle prior to this buffet. 2) We plan to have an excursion to the Salzburg area on Wednesday, 3 November for all participants and their guests. At the conclusion of the morning session, we will grab boxed lunches and ride to the salt mining town of Hallein on the German-Austrian border, where we will tour a former salt-mine. These tours are quite alot of fun and entail, among other things, hopping on 2 30-meter slides while wearing miner's suits. After the tour, we will drive to historic old Salzburg, where participants will have the chance to wander through the city to visit shops, cafes, museums, a fortress, and to learn all sorts of Mozart trivia. The outing day will culminate in the conference banquet (price included in the fee) at a Salzburg restaurant. After dinner those who wish can attend one of the famous Salzburg "Schlosskonzerte" at the Schloss Mirabell at 8 PM (at a cost of 30 EUR). If you wish to attend this concert, PLEASE INDICATE THIS ON THE REGISTRATION FORM, SINCE WE NEED TO RESERVE TICKETS WELL IN ADVANCE. Those not wishing to go to the concert will have a further opportunity to explore Salzburg's cafes and pubs. Buses will then return participants and their guests to Ringberg ööand the hotel late on Wednesday evening. Registration ------------ There will be a registration fee of EUR 100 (130 if you would like to attend the concert on Wednesday evening) for participants and their guests, which will be payable in cash at the opening buffet at Ringberg on Sunday evening. This will cover costs of the opening dinner, transportation to and from Ringberg and Munich, transportation to and from the Wednesday outing, entrance fees to the Hallein Salt Mines, the conference dinner on Wednesday evening, and conference materials. We cannot take payment by credit cards, so participants should come to Ringberg with sufficient amounts of Euros to cover this fee. Visa ---- For those participants from countries requiring a visa to enter Germany, it is best to start the application procedure soon. Please check with your local German Consulate or travel agent for information about required travel documents. The LOC is happy to provide letters of invitation if they are required. Travel to Munich Area --------------------- *************** *** By air: *** *************** The Munich Franz-Josef Strauss Airport lies approximately 30 and 100 km north of Munich and Ringberg respectively. Most major carriers offer service to Munich, with an ever increasing number of direct flights even on more distant routes. Those participants arriving on Sunday, 31 October, before mid-afternoon will be met at the airport by one of the LOC, and taken to the conference bus. For participants arriving in the area already on Friday or Saturday the LOC can help to arrange for hotel accommodations in the Munich area. ***************** *** By train: *** ***************** Munich Central Station (Hauptbahnhof) can be reached from anywhere within Europe. From there, there are good public transportation connections to all of Munich, as well as to the area around Ringberg Castle. People arriving by train on Sunday can take the conference bus to Ringberg as well. We will announce the pickup point for central Munich a few weeks before the meeting. *************** *** By car: *** *************** Schloss Ringberg is located about 70 km SE of Munich. For those interested in driving directly to the castle on Sunday the LOC will post detailed maps and instructions on the web-site in advance of the workshop. All major car rental companies have branches at the Munich Airport. There is ample parking at the castle, and at the hotel in Kreuth. ********************* *** Conference Bus*** ********************* We will hire a bus to take participants from the airport and a location in central Munich to the workshop. This bus will leave the airport around 2 PM on Sunday, October 31, and stop to pick up the participants visiting downtown Munich about 45 minutes later. The trip to Ringberg Castle will take about one and a half hours from there. The bus will return participants to central Munich and the airport on Saturday morning, arriving at the airport at about 10:30. We may arrange additional shuttles if a sufficient number of people need to be at the airport earlier on Saturday morning. Weather ------- Bavarian weather in the autumn can be higly variable. Daytime highs are usually around 10 degrees Celcius and nighttime lows near freezing. We can also expect to see some rain and fog at this time of year, but if we are lucky with sunny days, the autumn weather can be fantastic!
