4. Gamma-Astronomie 4.  Gamma-Ry Astronomy
After a total life of 9 years and 2 months, NASA ended the mission of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory (CGRO) on June 4th 2000. Previously one of the three gyroscopes had failed, and the continuation of the mission with only two working gyroscopes was judged by NASA to be too risky. The observatory was brought to a controlled re-entry from its 500 km orbit, landing in the Pacific.
In the last decade the Compton mission has brought us a "golden age" of gamma-ray astronomy. The two telescopes COMPTEL and EGRET, which were built with the significant engagement of our institute, have made the first complete sky maps in gamma-ray astronomy, and have discovered almost 300 sources. We have learned that the most compact and energetic objects in the universe produce gamma rays. In gamma-ray astronomy we are mainly concerned with neutron stars, stellar and massive black holes, supernova remnants, and the interaction of cosmic rays with matter and fields. We have learned that there are objects that have their luminosity maximum at gamma-ray energies. It is practically impossible to understand the physics of these objects without considering their properties in the gamma-ray range.
The four CGRO instruments delivered data of the best quality up to the end. As an illustration, Fig. III-15 shows sky-maps of the Galactic anticentre generated with COMPTEL and EGRET data from the last observation period in May 2000, compared with the very first observation in May 1991. The light curve of the Crab pulsar measured by EGRET in the last period also corresponds very well to that known from earlier observations.
Following the end of the Compton mission there is now a short period where no gamma-ray telescope is in operation, but the next milestones in gamma-ray astronomy are already fixed: April 2002 will see the launch of INTEGRAL - a low-energy gamma-ray astronomy project of ESA - and in 2006 the launch of the NASA project GLAST (a super-EGRET experiment for high energies) is planned. In addition great efforts are being made in the institute towards the realisation of a successor project, called MEGA, in the COMPTEL energy range.
INTEGRAL> will be the most important project for the gamma-ray group in the next five years. The payload of this satellite mission consists of two main instruments and two monitors. One of the main telescopes is the spectrometer SPI, whose spectral resolution of 2 keV and moderate angular resolution of 2.5 degrees will allow exact measurements of line profiles in some astronomical sources. The other main telescope is the imager IBIS, whose angular resolution is 12 arc minutes. The two monitors will perform complementary measurements of gamma-ray sources in the X-ray and optical ranges.
Our institute was significantly involved in the building of the spectrometer SPI. We developed the anticoincidence system, which defines the field-of-view of the instrument and strongly reduces the disturbing background. In the summer of 2000 all subsystems of the spectrometer were completed and delivered to CNES in Toulouse for integration. The functional tests of the complete telescope took place there at the end of the year. After the calibration in March/April 2001, the telescope will be delivered to ESA.
Abb. Fig. III-16 shows the core of the spectrometer, 19 hexagonal germanium detectors, which are cooled to about 85 K using an electrical cooling system. The germanium camera was developed and built in Toulouse. Fig III-17 shows a photograph of the lower section of the anticoincidence subsystem, which consists of a total of 91 bismuth germanate (BGO) scintillation crystals and 181 photomultipiers.
In parallel with the hardware development of the telescopes, an INTEGRAL Data Centre (ISDC) is being built up at Versoix near Geneva. After launch, data from the four INTEGRAL instruments will be processed and archived there, and delivered to the scientists involved. Our institute has been and continues to be involved in the preparation of the ISDC. In particular it has developed the software for the generation of large-scale sky maps with the spectrometer SPI.
In March 2000 GLAST was started on its way towards becoming the next NASA gamma-ray observatory after COMPTON. This observatory should be launched in 2006 and cover the energy range 20 MeV to 300 GeV. For the central instrument the proposal of the worldwide "Silicon-GLAST" collaboration was chosen. Although MPE was involved in the successful proposal, it will not be able to take part in the development of the main instrument, since the available manpower and financial resources were allocated to other institute-led projects of the gamma group.
Three scientists from the gamma-ray group of our institute are nevertheless involved with "Associated Investigator" status. These people are expected, in addition to the scientific work, to contribute to the calibration and analysis software and take part in accelerator tests etc. For next year the collaboration is preparing a balloon flight, where the first of 16 instrument modules will be tested under realistic conditions of cosmic ray background and high event rate.
An instrumental involvement in the GLAST project has been possible though the burst monitor, which was proposed by the MPE gamma-ray group in collaboration with the gamma-ray burst group from Marshall Space Flight Center and the University of Alabama in Huntsville, and which NASA selected in Spring 2000. The GBM will extend the energy range of the main EGRET instrument for the study of gamma-ray bursts to lower energies, with the goal of obtaining well-resolved spectra from 5 keV to 30 MeV. It consists of 12 circular NaI crystal sections for low energies (5-1000 keV) and two cylindrical BGO crystals for the high-energy range (0.15 - 30 MeV) (Fig. III-18). As well as the energy measurement, the GBM should be able to determine approximate positions of gamma-ray bursts using the count rates in the various NaI crystals with their different orientations; these positions can be sent to the main instrument so that, after repointing, it will be also able to detect afterglows of unrecognised or weak bursts.
The development of a telescope for "medium energy gamma-ray astronomy" (MEGA) in the energy range 0.4 - 50 MeV made great strides this year. MEGA will detect gamma-ray photons by Compton scattering or pair-production and will track the low-energy electrons generated in both processes in a stack of silicon-strip detectors. The absorption of the scattered photon or the e+e- pair is registered in three dimensions in a CsI calorimeter. The complete set of measured parameters for each detected event enables a direct reconstruction of the direction, energy and possibly the polarization of the incoming photon. The laboratory prototype of the MEGA telescope will consist, in its final form, of 11 layers each with 3 x 3 silicon strip detectors and 16 CsI modules of various thickness. Although the construction of the prototype detector is not yet complete, it has been possible to make the first measurements with radioactive sources both for the individual detectors and for the partly integrated system. Using sources in the near field of the telescope, as shown in Fig. III-19, it has been possible to confirm the essential properties, such as the energy and positional resolution of the individual detectors. The development of the detectors has been accompanied by extensive Monte-Carlo simulations for different configurations of the detector elements and the development of new imaging methods.
For the planning of a satellite mission, we have undertaken extensive studies of the concept, operation and sensitivity of a MEGA telescope in orbit. The requirement for this new telescope in the spectral transition region from hard X-rays (<400 keV) to the pure pair-production region above 50 MeV was primarily an improvement in sensitivity by a factor 10 over that of the earlier survey instruments COMPTEL and EGRET. Such an improvement will be urgently required in the coming years in order to close the conspicuous "hole" in multiwavelength observations after the end of COMPTEL. The upcoming missions INTEGRAL and GLAST will only be completed with measurements in the MEGA range.
The MEGA studies peaked with the proposal for a Small Satellite (Kleinsatellit) Mission, which was submitted to the DLR in August 2000 and presented to the selection committee in September. MEGA was supported by an international collaboration of groups from the USE and France, convened under the leadership of MPE. In the selection results MEGA was ranked as the second project after the astrometry project DIVA, and should be correspondingly developed further in order to be realisable at a future time.
With OPTIMA (Optical Pulsar Timing Analyser), a sensitive optical high-speed photometer has been developed in order to make measurements of pulsars and other rapidly varying sources. OPTIMA was operated in campaigns on the 3.5m telescope on Calar Alto (26 Dec 1999 - 3 Jan 2000), on the 2.2m telescope on La Silla (5 - 8 June 2000) and on the 1.35m telescope on Skinakas (4 - 8 July 2000). These measurements were up to now only performed in white light (wavelength range 450-950 nm) without a filter. The goal of the January campaign was the Crab pulsar (primarily to verify the instrument performance) and the high-energy pulsar Geminga. Results of these observations are described in the scientific results part of this report. In June/July observations of cataclysmic variables (for HU Aqr see the science section) were performed as well as simultaneous observations in the optical and with the X-ray satellite RXTE. In particular the measurements from the Skinakas Observatory resulted in very good simultaneous observations of the newly discovered (in April 2000) X-ray source RXJ 1118+48. This transient source probably consists of an accreting black hole in orbit around a normal star. In X-rays, strong quasi-periodic intensity variations had already been detected at the start of the outburst. Strong variations are also found in the optical emission from RXJ 1118+48 observed by OPTIMA. The analysis of correlations between X-ray and optical emission is at present underway and not yet complete.
