Dark Universe Workshop at MPE 6.-7.05.2004

Description of the Workshop...

  The workshop focuses on X-ray and related studies of the content of deep X-ray surveys, the astrophysics of galaxy clusters, and the intergalactic medium. The meeting follows the tradition of the Japanese-German X-ray astrophysical workshop that originally started with the aim to exploit the complementary X-ray observational approach with the ASCA abd ROSAT satellites. Now the interests have of course shifted to an exchange of expertise of working with XMM-Newton and Chandra data and to prepare for the use of ASTRO-E-II and to discuss the results obtained in general.

At this stage, quite a number of important results habe been harvested with XMM-Newton and Chandra, calibrations and data reduction procedures have become more stable, and the archives have been filled substantially so that science questions can be approached by the analysis of larger study samples. This is a good time to review the first set of implications drawn from these advanced X-ray observations and to discuss further strategies and goals as well as prospects for future X-ray missions.

The special atmosphere of the Ringberg castle is particularly promoting discussions beyond the scheduled sessions and we will do our best to avoid the rushing atmopshere of large conferences. Posters in addition to the talks are welcome. Please indicate that you would like to present a poster in advance so that we can prepare for it. Please provide us with the details of your travel plans and requests on the the reply form obtained from here.

Venue...

The venue for the workshop is Schloß Ringberg (Ringberg Castle), a turn of the century castle located in the foothills of the Bavarian Alps, and overlooking the Tegernsee. Located about 70 km south of Munich, the Tegernsee is a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and small resort villages. The peaceful location, meeting schedule, and attendance limit of 50 set by the size of the castle are all conducive to an informal workshop atmosphere offering many opportunities for stimulating discussion. The scientific sessions will begin on Monday, 3 May 2004 at 9 AM, and end on Wednesday afternoon, 5 May 2004.

Travel Arrangements...

Travel to Schloß Ringberg: Participants will have to travel from Munich, into the Bavarian pre-alps by rail to Tegernsee, from where we plan to have a mini-bus to ferry participants from the railway station at Tegernsee to Ringberg Castle on Sunday and Monday. Similar arrangements will be made for the return connections Wednesday aofternoon. The trip by rail from Munich to Tegernsee will take about one and a half hours. The minibus shuttle between Tegernsee and Ringberg will take ~20 minutes. Earliest possible arrival at the castle is 15:00 on Sunday 2 May.

Arriving in Bavaria by air: The Munich Franz-Josef Strauss Airport (MUC) lies approximately 17 km and 30 km north-east of Garching and Munich, respectively. For participants arriving in the area already on Friday or Saturday the LOC can recommend and attempt to arrange for hotel accommodations in Munich.

Airport train transfer:
1)From Munich Airport (Flughafen Muenchen) to Munich main train station (Muenchen Hauptbahnhof, abbreviated as Muenchen Hbf), using the S1 or S8 metro (.pdf file) lines;
2) From Munich main train station (Muenchen Hauptbahnhof, abbreviated as Muenchen Hbf) to Tegernsee, using the BOB trains.
Train connections between Munich main train station (Muenchen Hauptbahnhof, abbreviated as Muenchen Hbf) and Tegernsee, using the BOB trains can be investigated using the German railways (Deutsche Bahn, DB) web-based travel service. When using the English version of this service, the entries to use are: "Munich Airport", "Munich" (for the main train station) and "Tegernsee".

Airport bus transfers:
Alternatively, and possibly more useful for those who plan to spend some days in downtown Munich before or after the Ringberg workshop, there is a "Lufthansa Airport Bus" coach service which collects passengers outside terminal A  (every 20 minutes between 06:17 and 21:37, daily); terminal D (every 20 minutes between 06:25 and 21:45, daily) and the central area, Z (every 20 minutes between 06:20 and 21:40, daily) of Munich Airport. This service goes direct to Munich main train station in circa 45 minutes, stopping once en route at Nordfriedhof U6 metro station in the Schwabing district, North of Munich. Return journeys operate at simlar frequency. Adult single: 9 Euro. Adult return 14.50 Euro.

Arriving in Bavaria by train: Munich's main train station (Muenchen Hauptbahnhof, area map , main station map) can be reached from anywhere within Europe. From here, there are good public transportation connections to all of Munich. There are even railway connections to Tegernsee, in the vicinity of Schloß Ringberg.

Train connections between Munich main train station (Muenchen Hauptbahnhof, abbreviated as Muenchen Hbf) and Tegernsee, using the BOB metro trains can be investigated using the German railways (Deutsche Bahn, DB) web-based travel service. When using the English version of this service, the entries to use are: "Munich Airport", "Munich" (for the main train station) and "Tegernsee".

Alternatively, we have text files of:
Timetable for outbound trains from Munich main train station (Muenchen Hbf.) to Tegernsee for Sunday afternoon and evening 2 May 2004;
Timetable for return trains from Tegernsee to Munich main train station (Muenchen Hbf.) for Wednesday afternoon 5 May 2004.

Note that in all cases, you will need to buy the appropriate ticket for your journey at the airport ticket desk (Fahrscheine) before descending to the platform and boarding the train. Further details regarding travel to Ringberg from Munich airport (in particular about navigating through Munich central train station) are available in the Arriving at Schloss Ringberg page, however we reproduce some useful maps below for convenience.

Arriving in Bavaria by car:
Schloß Ringberg is located about 70 km SE of Munich. For those interested in driving directly to the castle on Sunday,  2 May the LOC can send out detailed maps and instructions in advance of the workshop. There is ample parking at the castle. For those staying in Munich either before or after the workshop, note that parking can be a problem in the city center. For those who wish to drive their own cars, maps of the Munich and Tegernsee areas are provided below.

Visas...

For those participants from countries requiring a visa to enter Germany, it is best to start the application procedure several months before the workshop. Please check with your local German Consulate or travel agent for information about required travel documents.

Accommodation & Meals...

During the workshop, most participants will be lodged at Ringberg Castle. The castle has 34 bedrooms, 7 of which can be used as doubles. The cost for the 3 night stay at the Castle including all meals except Sunday dinner will be about Euro 300 per person. Special dietary requests are happily accommodated provided advance notice is given. If you have any requests (e.g. vegetarian meals) please indicate this on the ASCII form.

The LOC will make arrangements for lodging during the conference for all participants and their accompanying persons, as desired. We will do our best to adhere to everyone's wishes.

For participants wishing to stay in Bavaria before/after the Ringberg workshop, the LOC can recommend and attempt to assist with booking accommodation. Please do not hesitate to contact us with any requests. Unfortunately, we cannot make reservations for extended side trips. Room rates for hotels in the Munich/Garching area range from Euro 90-220 for singles or doubles.

Credit cards are now accepted at most hotels including Ringberg Castle. We will notify you if there are exceptions to this. Participants should indicate all their lodging preferences on the ASCII form.

Social Events...

An excursion to Schloss Neuschwanstein is planned for interested participants and their guests on Wednesday afternoon. Details will be provided later when we know that there is enough interest.
