The Cygnus Loop in the soft X-ray bandX-ray image of the Cygnus Loop obtained during the ROSAT All-Sky Survey. This supernova explosion cloud in the Cygnus constellation is generally called a middle-aged SNR of 10 to 20 thousand years age at a distance of about 770 pc. This remnant has preserved more or less its spherical shape except for a break-out towards the south. In addition, there are many bright, filamentary structures. The PSPC observation has allowed the temperature and density structure to be studied on a fine angular scale (few arcmin). Surprisingly, this remnant is not in a pressure equilibrium. gzipped PostScript version gzipped 300 dpi tif version ROSAT (Röntgensatellit) 1992 Images from the X-ray sky with the ROSAT telescope · All rights reserved: © Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik, Postfach 1603, 85740 Garching, Germany.
