Recording of the Extragalactic X-ray BackgroundThe X-ray background unveiled: This extreme deep X-ray exposure was gained near the Big Dipper. In the centre of the field of view, about the size of the full moon, more than 60 X-ray point sources can be determined - mostly quasars at cosmologic distances. With ROSAT, for the first time these point sources were separated from the X-ray background. They make up about half of the emission assumed so far as background. gzipped 300 dpi tif version ROSAT (Röntgensatellit) 1992 Images from the X-ray sky with the ROSAT telescope · All rights reserved: © Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik, Postfach 1603, 85740 Garching, Germany.
