Three-Color Image of the Soft Diffue X-Ray BackgroundThree-color image of the soft diffue X-ray background from the ROSAT sky survey. The projection is in galactic coordinates with the galactic centre in the middle. The extended emission at high galactic latitudes in the 1/4 keV band (red) stems from the local hot bubble, an about 100,000 year old supernova remnant in the solar neighbourhood, but also from the galactic halo. At higher energies (3/4 keV: yellow - 1.5 keV: blue) the emission stems predominantly from more distant galactic supernova remnants and star winds. the small bright regions (white) are either compact supernova remnants or clusters of galaxies.
