Soft X-Ray Background Radiation in the Direction of the Lockman Hole

X-ray image of the diffuse background radiation in the 1/4&mbsp;keV band in the direction of the Lockman Hole in the constellation Ursa Major, the region with the absolute minimum of interstellar absorption in our Galaxy. The superposed contours show the variations in the hydrogen column density. This picture demonstrates the detailed anti-correlation between X-ray intensity and neutral matter, which suggests an absorption of the X-ray radiation generated further away by clouds of matter in the foreground.
