Supernova Remnant W50 with SS433X-ray brightness distribution of the supernova remnant W 50 with its central object SS 433. SS 433 is a double star system with an orbital period of almost 14 days, of which two relativistic jets are emitted in opposite directions with about a quarter of the light velocity. The X-ray emission of the jets is of non-thermal character and is generated by interaction of the jets with the ambient medium. The X-ray emission of SS 433 itself is thermal with temperatures of more than 108 K. The left jet of the image is directed to the observer. gzipped high-resolution tif image ROSAT (Röntgensatellit) 1996 Images from the X-ray sky with the ROSAT telescope · All rights reserved: © Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik, Postfach 1603, 85740 Garching, Germany.
