Stephan's Quintet

Optical image of Stephan's Quintet, a compact group of spiral galaxies, overlayed with X-ray contours (ROSAT HRI). The contours show that only a part of the discovered X-ray emission stems from the diffuse hot intergalactic medium. Essential contributions come from the individual members of the group and from a region between the galaxies, from which also radio emission is observed. This structure presumably is caused by the interactions and collisions of the galaxies, respectively.
