Stephan's QuintetOptical image of Stephan's Quintet, a compact group of spiral galaxies, overlayed with X-ray contours (ROSAT HRI). The contours show that only a part of the discovered X-ray emission stems from the diffuse hot intergalactic medium. Essential contributions come from the individual members of the group and from a region between the galaxies, from which also radio emission is observed. This structure presumably is caused by the interactions and collisions of the galaxies, respectively. gzipped PostScript image gzipped high-resolution tif image ROSAT (Röntgensatellit) 1997 Images from the X-ray sky with the ROSAT telescope · All rights reserved: © Max-Planck-Institut für extraterrestrische Physik, Postfach 1603, 85740 Garching, Germany.
