Galaxy Cluster RX J1347-1145

RX J1347-1145 is the brightest galaxy cluster in X-rays. An HRI exposure shows the 100 million degree hot plasma between the galaxies. The overlayed optical image shows two background galaxies (arrows) distorted by the effect of a gravitational lens. This distant and relatively young cluster surprisingly shows several properties typical of more developed cluster of galaxies.
