Demonstration Model of the X-Ray Telescope XMM

Each of the three XMM telescopes contains 58 Wolter I mirror pairs of a paraboloid and an associated hyperboloid nested in a cofocal and coaxial configuration. A demonstration model consisting of three mirror shells was tested in detail at the 130 m long PANTER test facility of the MPE in February 1995. The mirror shells are replicated in a galvanic process from high-grade aluminium mandrels having a negative Wolter I shape. The replication and assembling are realized by Medialario s.r.l. in Bosisio Parini, Italy; the mandrels are manufactured by Carl Zeiss in Oberkochen, Germany.
