Getting Archive data
[Visit XMM-Newton at MPE]

In order to get familiar to the XMMSAS before you apply it to your own data set, you can use public data sets. If you are at MPE you can go to the internal XMM Archive that contains ODFs and processed EPIC-pn data and work with those data. In any case you can use the data sets that are made available for test purposes at VILSPA. You can retrive the data from their VILSPA's XMM Science Archive.
Please proceed with the following steps to get you data prepared for further analysis:

  1. Retrieve the data set you want from either the MPE XMM Archive or the VILSPA's XMM Science Archive and put the into your ODF directory. The best is to use the latter one, because all these are complete data sets (which is not necessary true for the MPE XMM Archive files).
  2. If you retrieved the data from the archives, gunzip and untar the data file, e.g.:
        gunzip 0060_0122700101.tar.gz
        tar -xvf 0060_0122700101.tar

This will write a complete ODF into your ODF-directory.
  3. Now proceed as described on the System Setup page.
  4. There are still data sets in the archive that are incomplete!. Please check if you have the housekeeping files in your ODF. Those files have the three letter code ...PMH..., ...PEH..., or ...PFH... In case they are not present, please refer to ODF fix page to see how to proceed.

Now you can start with the analysis (see Data Preparation).
