GRB 990712
     J. Heise and J. in 't Zand, Space Research Organization of the
Netherlands, Utrecht; G. Tarei and V. Torroni, BeppoSAX Science
Operation Center, Telespazio, Rome; M. Feroci and G. Gandolfi,
Istituto di Astrofisica Spaziale, CNR, Rome; and E. Palazzi,
Istituto Tecnologie e Studio Radiazioni Extraterrestri, Bologna,
report:  "A gamma-ray burst of moderate intensity, with the
strongest x-ray counterpart observed to date, triggered the
BeppoSAX Gamma-Ray Burst Monitor on July 12.69655 UT and was
simultaneously detected in the Wide Field Camera (WFC) unit 2.  The
burst lasted for about 30 s in both the gamma-ray (40-700 keV) and
x-ray (2-26 keV) energy ranges and has a double-peaked structure.
The WFC-determined position of the x-ray counterpart to GRB 990712
is R.A. = 22h31m50s, Decl. = -73o24'.4 (equinox 2000.0), with an
error radius of 2' (99-percent confidence level).  Due to sun
constraints, BeppoSAX cannot perform a follow-up observation with
the Narrow Field Instruments."
