GRB host studies

GHostS
GHostS stands for Gamma-Ray Burst Host Studies. It is the largest public database dedicated to galaxies hosting gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) and is available at http://www.grbhosts.org. I created this database for the benefit of the scientific community dealing with exploring these super energetic phenomena in nature. As of August 2011, GHostS contains:
✔ Information for 119 GRB hosts
✔ Multi-band UV/optical/near IR/ mid IR photometry
✔ Optical spectroscopy
✔ Information from 219 papers
✔ Virtual Observatory features
and has been used by scientists for the publication of 14 peer reviewed articles.

GRB Hosts
Galaxies hosting gamma-ray bursts were mainly unknown until 10 years ago. Most of them are small galaxies, similar to the satellite galaxy of our Milky Way, called Large Magellanic Cloud. The difference is that the galaxies hosting GRBs are forming stars at a much higher rate, typically ten stars like the sun, every year.

The Database
GHostS is a SQL database that provides easy access to information obtained from ground- and space-based facilities. It also shows images of the relevant field in the sky as seen by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) and the Digitalized Sky Survey (POSS, SERC). The presentation of scientific data makes the database not only an invaluable research tool, but also very enjoyable to navigate for the scientific community. GHostS is partly funded by Spitzer/NASA grant RSA Agreement 1287913.
