The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE), located in Garching near Munich, is a world-renowned institute for ground- and space-based experimental astrophysics, playing a leading role in several large astronomical projects. Postdoctoral position in high-redshift galaxy / black hole evolution (m/f/d)

The Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics (MPE) invites applications for a postdoctoral position to join the research group led by Dr. Hannah Übler.

We are looking for candidates with a background in high-redshift galaxy observations. Additional experience in the theoretical modelling of high-redshift galaxies and/or supermassive black holes is welcome. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with data from JWST/NIRSpec programmes, focusing on the physical properties of galaxies in the first few billion years, and their supermassive black holes.

The start date of the position is October 2026, with some flexibility (to be negotiated).

The position is limited to three years and according to current German labor law. Applicants must have obtained a PhD in astronomy or a related field before starting the position. Salary and full social benefits are based on the German TVöD pay scale for public employees, depending on experience.
