GCN Circular #33989
K. L. Page (U Leicester) and S. Laha (GSFC/UMBC) report on behalf of the Neil Gehrels Swift Observatory Team:
At 03:51:12 UT, the Swift Burst Alert Telescope (BAT) triggered and located GRB 230618A (trigger=1175438). Swift slewed immediately to the burst. The BAT on-board calculated location is RA, Dec 196.588, +3.306 which is

```
with an uncertainty of 3 arcmin (radius, 90% containment, including systematic uncertainty). Due to a telemetry outage caused by a recent storm in Guam, no further BAT data will be available until a ground station pass.
Using promptly downlinked data we find a bright, uncatalogued X-ray source located at RA, Dec 196.60313, 3.30257 which is equivalent to:

   Dec(J2000) = +03d 18' 09.3"
```
with an uncertainty of 5.8 arcseconds (radius, 90% containment). This position may be improved as more data are received; the latest position is available at https://www.swift.ac.uk/sper. No spectrum from the promptly downlinked event data is yet available to determine the column density.
The initial flux in the 2.5 s image was 6.46e-10 erg cm^-2 s^-1 (0.2-10 keV).
UVOT took a finding chart exposure of nominal 150.000 seconds with the White filter starting 137 seconds after the BAT trigger. No credible afterglow candidate has been found in the initial data products. Data from the 2.7'x2.7' sub-image are not available at this time. The 8'x8' region for the list of sources generated on-board covers 100% of the XRT error circle. The list of sources is typically complete to about 18 mag. No correction has been made for the expected extinction corresponding to E(B-V) of 0.025.

Using promptly downlinked XRT event data for GRB 230618A, we find an enhanced XRT position of the afterglow: RA, Dec: 196.60310, 3.30343 which is equivalent to:

```
with an uncertainty of 1.9 arcseconds (radius, 90% confidence). Analysis of the promptly available data is online at http://www.swift.ac.uk/sper/1175438.

R. Strausbaugh (University of Minnesota), A. Cucchiara (NASA) report on behalf of a larger collaboration:
We observed the GRB 230618A (Page et al., GCN 33989) field with the LCOGT 1-meter Sinistro instrument at the McDonald Observatory, Texas, USA site, on June 18, from 04:31 to 05:03 UT (corresponding to 0.33 to 1.20 hours from the GRB trigger time) with the SDSS r and i filters.
We performed a series of 3x300s exposures in each band. We detect an uncatalouged source within the Swift-XRT enhanced error region (P.A. Evans et al., GCN 33990).
The following magnitudes are calculated using the PanSTARRS catalog as reference:

i = 19.16 +/- 0.02
```
These magnitudes are not corrected for galactic extinction.

L. Page (U Leicester) and S. Laha (GSFC/UMBC) report on behalf of et al., GCN 33989) errorbox 10 sec after notice time and 42 sec after trigger time at 2023-06-18 03:54:03 UT, with upper limit up to 19.5 mag. The observations began at zenith distance = 67 deg. The sun altitude is -78.0 deg.
The galactic latitude b = 66 deg., longitude l = 314 deg.

GCN Circular #34001
WeiKang Zheng and Alexei V. Filippenko (UC Berkeley) report on
behalf of the KAIT GRB team:
The 0.76-m Katzman Automatic Imaging Telescope (KAIT), located at
Lick Observatory, responded to GRB 230618A detected by Swift
(Page et al., GCN 33989) starting at 04:31:35 UT, about 0.69 hours
after the bust. Observations were performed in the clear (roughly R)
filter, and the exposure time was 60s per image, with a total of 31
images were obtained. We marginally detected the optical afterglow
reported by Strausbaugh et al. (GCN 33992) in our coadd image
in clear band, which we measured its brightness of 20.8 +/- 0.3 mag
at a mid time of ~0.79 hours after the burst, calibrated to the
Pan-STARRS1 catalog.

We have analysed 6.3 ks of XRT data for GRB 230618A, from 118 s to 30.0 ks after the BAT trigger. The data comprise 157 s in Windowed Timing (WT) mode (the first 9 s were taken while Swift was slewing) with the remainder in Photon Counting (PC) mode. The best available XRT position (using the promptly downlinked event data, the XRT-UVOT alignment and matching UVOT field sources to the USNO-B1 catalogue) is RA, Dec = 196.60531, 3.30238 which is equivalent to:

with an uncertainty of 1.9 arcsec (radius, 90% confidence).
The light curve can be modelled with a series of power-law decays. The initial decay index is alpha=1.10 (+0.13, -0.10). At T+594 s the decay steepens to an alpha of 2.90 (+0.40, -0.23) before breaking again at T+3047 s to a final decay with index alpha=0.29 (+0.68, -0.29).
A spectrum formed from the WT mode data can be fitted with an absorbed power-law with a photon spectral index of 1.55 (+0.13, -0.12). The best-fitting absorption column is 1.4 (+0.5, -0.4) x 10^21 cm^-2, in excess of the Galactic value of 2.1 x 10^20 cm^-2 (Willingale et al. 2013). The PC mode spectrum has a photon index of 1.73 (+/-0.17) and a best-fitting absorption column of 2.1 (+0.7, -0.6) x 10^21 cm^-2. The counts to observed (unabsorbed) 0.3-10 keV flux conversion factor deduced from this spectrum is 4.1 x 10^-11 (5.2 x 10^-11) erg cm^-2 count^-1.
A summary of the PC-mode spectrum is thus:

The Swift/UVOT began settled observations of the field of GRB 230618A 137 s after the BAT trigger (Page et al., GCN Circ. 33989). No optical afterglow consistent with the XRT position (Evans GCN Circ. 33990) is detected in the initial UVOT exposures. The source was however detected in r and i (Strausbaugh et al, GCN Circ. 33992 and KAIT (Zhang and Filipenko, GCN Cric. 34001) in clear (R). Preliminary 3-sigma upper limits using the UVOT photometric system (Breeveld et al. 2011, AIP Conf. Proc. 1358, 373) for the first finding chart (FC) exposure and subsequent exposures are:

Using 3710 s of XRT Photon Counting mode data and 5 UVOT images for GRB 230618A, we find an astrometrically corrected X-ray position (using the XRT-UVOT alignment and matching UVOT field sources to the USNO-B1 catalogue): RA, Dec = 196.60314, +3.30351 which is equivalent to:

We image the field of GRB 230618A detected by SWIFT (Page et al., GCN 33989) with telescope of Nastro Verde Observatory - Sorrento (Naples), Italy. Member of: AAVSO - American Association of Variable Star Observers. UAI/SSV - Unione Astrofili Italiani/sezione stelle variabili. AstroCampania Associazione
Observations began at 21:02 UT on 2023/06/18, 19 hours after GRB's detection, with principal telescope SC 0.35 f/10 with focal reduced + CCD Sbig ST10 XME I took 24 image of 60 sec each. All images are unfiltered, calibrated with masterdark and masterflat,stacked with Tycho Tracker software We have not detected any clearly visible sources, up to 20.3th magnitude with clear sky at RA(J2000) = 13h 06m 24.75s Dec(J2000) = +03d 18' 09.3" on a field of view 23.3 x 15.7 arcmin

Using the data set from T-275 to T+963 sec from the recent telemetry downlink, we report further analysis of BAT GRB 230618A (trigger #1175438) (Page et al., GCN Circ. 33989). The BAT ground-calculated position is RA, Dec = 196.642, 3.278 deg which is

with an uncertainty of 1.7 arcmin, (radius, sys+stat, 90% containment). The partial coding was 100%.
The BAT light curve showed a complex structure with a duration of about 200 sec. T90 (15-350 keV) is 104.05 +- 22.86 sec (estimated error including systematics).
The time-averaged spectrum from T-27.78 to T+107.00 sec is best fit by a simple power-law model. The power law index of the time-averaged spectrum is 1.35 +- 0.15. The fluence in the 15-150 keV band is 1.5 +- 0.2 x 10^-06 erg/cm2. The 1-sec peak photon flux measured from T+9.04 sec in the 15-150 keV band is 0.5 +- 0.1 ph/cm2/sec. All the quoted errors are at the 90% confidence level.
