Public talks by MPE speakers
Open House
Every two years, the institute participates in the "open house" event at the Garching campus.
This year there will be no Open House at the MPE.
Girls' Day
Since 2008, the institute takes part in the annual "Girl's Day", where girls have the possibility to learn more about a possible career in science and technology. The programme and pictures of the most recent event can be found here.
The last "Girl's Day" event took place on April 27, 2023.
Max-Planck-Day
On the occasion of the 100th anniversary of the Max-Planck-Society, all around Germany Max-Planck institutes opened their doors on November 11, 2011. The MPE programme can be found here.
Café & Kosmos
The Café & Kosmos series of events is organised jointly by ESO, the Excellence Cluster Universe and the Max-Planck Institutes for Physics, Astrophysics and Extraterrestrial Physics. The discussions usually take place on the second Tuesday of each month at Vereinsheim in Munich. After a brief introduction the scientists take questions from the audience and discuss current issues from the cosmos.

MPE event series: Women in Astronomy
The MPE is actively engaging in promoting equal opportunities for girls and women in science. The aim should be to promote women and their participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), where they are still underrepresented.
To celebrate the International day of Women and Girls in Science, the MPE is sponsoring a special event series "Women in Astronomy". Every year an outstanding female scientist will be our guest and will give two talks, one aimed at the Institute and one at the public.This year our lecturer is Dr. Nadine Neumayer (MPIA Heidelberg). The "Women in Astronomy" Public Lecture (in German) will be on February 11 in the Supernova Planetarium at 7:00 pm. The title of the public talk is "Giganten der Schwerkraft - Schwarze Löcher in den Zentren von Galaxien”.
The Supernova will be open 1 hour before and for 1 hour after the public talk to allow people to visit the exhibition. We plan to have at least one German-speaking female scientist at every station of the exhibition before and after the talk, to answer questions about science and their personal experience in the field. We are still seeking more volunteers, so please let us know if you are able to do this.
International Year of Astronomy 2009
The International Year of Astronomy 2009 (IYA 2009) commemorated the 400th anniversary of the first observations of the sky with a Galilean telescope. The MPE joined the celebrations with several activities and events. (more)F
